The eight year-old, who placed runner-up in 2011 and 2013 and is a 40-1 shot to claim the crown this year with Paddy Power Paddy Power, has been allotted 57kg which is an increase of 0.5kg. This is the same weight allocated to Godolphin’s Cavalryman (33-1), and that 2012 winner Green Moon carried. The top weight of 58kg has been assigned to Japanese entry Admire Rakti (16-1).

Racing Victoria’s chief handicapper Greg Carpenter admitted that framing the weights for this year’s race was the toughest task he’d faced in his ten years in the role.

“Under the Australian rules of racing I am obliged to release a top weight of 58kg, however with recent staying champions Fiorente, Dunaden and Americain now retired, there was no natural topweight so I’ve had to effectively lift weights 2kg for the majority of runners,” Carpenter said, which explains Red Cadeaux’s sudden increase.

12-1 ante-post favourite The Offer was allocated 56.5kg, the same weight given to Marco Botti’s Dandino (25-1) and Andrew Balding’s Side Glance.

Botti’s other runner, Seismos (also 25-1), sits on 56kg, while the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Hillstar (33-1) is at 55.5kg. Estimate was ruled out of the race by connections on Monday, but it’s of note that he was given 55.5kg too.

Pale Mimosa (16-1), Gatewood (50-1), Willing Foe (40-1), and Ebor winner Mutual Regard (33-1) are all on the low 55kg.
